Sonko, three others plead afresh in Sh14m graft

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and three others were yesterday charged afresh, before the anti-corruption court over Sh14.1 million tender on hiring of heavy equipment.

Sonko, Fredrick Odhiambo alias Fred Oyugi -T/A Yiro Enterprises, ROG Security Ltd and its director Antony Otieno Ombok alias Jamal appeared before trial Magistrate Peter Ooko.

They were charged afresh after the magistrate allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to amend the charges.

In a ruling on the DPP’s application to prefer more  charges against the suspects, Ooko said that no prejudice will be suffered if the same is done, since the case has not commenced for hearing. 

“The amended charge sheet is hereby admitted and l direct it be read to the suspects,” ruled Ooko.  

Suspected property 

The suspects denied charges of conspiracy to commit an economic crime, conflict of interest, money laundering and acquisition of proceeds of crime.

Sonko is accused of having a conflict of interest in a contract on the hiring of heavy equipment by the county government. The tender was issued to Yiro Enterprises.

The governor allegedly received Sh8.4 million through his five accounts at Equity Bank from Yiro Enterprises .

The trio is accused of conspiring to commit an offense of corruption by dealing with suspected property in the sum of Sh14.1 million.

The offence was committed on diverse dates between December 27 and 28, 2018 at Nairobi County.  The hearing begins on Monday.
