Sonko’s bail ruling deffered to next week
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will remain in police custody after a Kiambu court deferred its ruling on bail terms to February 9.
In a communication to the parties, Kiambu Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo said the ruling whether to release Sonko on bond or not will now be delivered on Tuesday next week as it is not yet ready.
The chief magistrate’s message communicated through the court’s Chief Executive Officer came a few hours before the scheduled time of 2 pm and the ousted governor is expected to be back in the court in a week.
Last Monday Sonko denied charges of forcible entry into a parcel of land in Buruburu Phase and assaulting nine people causing bodily harm. The prosecution argued that he should be denied bail.
After lengthy submissions by both the Prosecution and Defence teams over bail terms, Atambo differed the ruling to Thursday (today) and ordered that Sonko be remanded at the Gigiri police station.
Sonko has denied that on 25th may 2019 at Buruburu Phase 4 in Kamukunji, Nairobi with others not before court, he forcibly and violently entered into land No. LR Nairobi Block 78/8, the property of Landmark International Properties Limited. The complainant is Patrick Macharia Nderitu of Buruburu Phase 5.
He was also charged that on 25th at Buruburu Phase 4 in Kamukunji, he unlawfully led a group of men and assaulted Evans Obaga, George Chege, Paul Kahiga, Charles Karori, Alex Kioko, Stephen Ouma, Musyoki Kavunda, John Mungai and Joel Kinja, thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm.
The former Governor is being represented by John Khaminwa, Assa Nyakundi, Danstan Omari and Evans Ondieki.
