County commissioners will this morning meet in Nairobi, to discuss safety measures on re-opening of schools for safe learning in post-Covid period.

Part of the discussions in the high level meeting, will be on desk designs the government seeks to purchase, for primary and secondary schools, in an effort to promote social distancing.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and senior officials from the Office of the President, are expected to preside over the function, to be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

Speaking at Technical University of Mombasa where he  inspected the level of compliance to Covid-19 protocols, Magoha said today’s meeting seeks to develop desk designs for schools.

Full compliance

Magoha said the government will spend Sh1.9 billion to purchase new desks, that will comply with the Ministry of Health Covid-19 protocols.

He said the money was availed following the presidential directive adding that the national government has done so much for the sector, contrary to what is being reported.

The former Uinersity of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor maintained that basic education institutions in the country will re-open in January 2021 and not earlier.

“The ministry has developed prototype furniture to be used when schools resume,” he said.

According to the ministry, the desks will be locally assembled by artisans in the counties and should be ready, ahead of January 2021 re-opening of schools.

“We have to ensure there is full compliance to Covid-19 regulations and protocols when schools re-open,”Magoha said.

At the same time, he dismissed reports that the government has not released money for the schools as speculated.

He said in the last four days, the country has recorded below five per cent Covid-19 positive cases; the recommended rate by the World Health Organization before reopening the country.

“We shall closely monitor the situation. If this trend continues, we will in the next 14 days make an appropriate decision,’’ said the CS.

Magoha said universities and colleges were set to re-open this month but this was shelved due to poor level of preparedness

He said all learning institutions must be safe and that measures such as adequate water points, social distancing in all areas and other protocols outlined by the
