TSC annuls 1968 deal with teachers union
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a notice to terminate an agreement it signed with Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut).
TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia issued a two-month notice, saying the agreement signed in 1968 will be revoked on grounds that Knut’s membership is below the simple majority.
“Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 2 of the Recognition Agreement existing between the TSC and the Knut and Section 4 (1) of the Labour Relations Act, 2007, the commission hereby issues a two months notice to Knut to terminate or revoke the Recognition Agreement dated May 15, 1968,” said Macharia.
She issued the notice in a letter dated November 4 and addressed to Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion.
If TSC is to terminate the agreement, Knut’s bargaining power will be severely affected.
“Knut does not have the simple majority of unionisable employees under the employment of the Teachers Service Commission as at November 4, 2019,” the letter added.
Macharia also notified the union it has made requisite application to the National Labour boards in accordance with Section 54(4) of the Labour Relations Act.
This comes just days after TSC said it has deregistered Sossion from the register of teachers and blacklisted him from teaching in Kenyan schools.
