The new enhanced medical insurance for teachers proposes to cater for a maximum family size of six.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) says  the cover is to cater for the principal member, one legal spouse and four children, biological or legally adopted.

In the enhanced plan valued at Sh180 million, TSC is seeking to procure a comprehensive medical insurance cover, group life, last expense cover and other related benefits for its teachers and their dependants countrywide, covering three years.

Tender documents indicate that children aged 0–18 are under parental care and will directly access the benefits. Those aged 19-25 are assumed to be in school but documentary evidence must be provided in case they want to access the benefits.

TSC indicates that the out-patient cover will cater for all routine services including consultations, prescribed diagnostic laboratory and radiology services, such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI and CT Scans.

It will also cover prescribed physiotherapy, drugs and dressing, referral outpatient to specialists, and HIV/Aids-related conditions to the full cover limit per family per annum.

Doctor’s fee

It also covers routine immunisation and baby friendly vaccines, antenatal and post-natal care up to six weeks post-delivery, and pre-existing chronic conditions, including cancer.

“For outpatient services, we are seeking portability with no restrictions to panel of providers that our members can access,” TSC says.

For in-patient, TSC proposes to cover doctor’s fee, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), theatre charges, pathology and laboratory services, among other benefits.
