Bomas of Kenya, the epicentre of cultural tourism in Kenya, is set for new dawn where revellers will enjoy the quality ambience in the form of digitized sounds and tunes of various ethnic communities.

Dubbed SampleBar Kenya, the venture is not only interactive but is also ethnomusicological in its orientation and geared toward helping the audience relate to their different cultures in form of sounds that have hitherto been missing in the original settings.

Bomas, which first opened its doors to the public in 1971, has majorly been preoccupied with displaying traditional villages belonging to several communities in the country.

Since 1973, it has also been the home of Kenya’s national dance company – Bomas Harambee Dancers, which portrays the diversity of Kenyan music and dance in the form of live performances.

“As an institution, we realized that most young people do not understand their traditional tunes. And that is why we saw the need to fill the gap by introducing an interactive and up-to-date digital solution for our generations to enjoy these tunes,” said Bomas of Kenya CEO Peter Gitaa.

SampleBar Kenya is the only and first of its kind in Africa, initiated by Bomas of Kenya in partnership with Libido Music AB, a Swedish innovation-oriented company with extensive experience in developing and providing interactive digital solutions and installations for museums, science centres, events, and public spaces.

The partnership will give birth to a unique and original museology installation giving children, researchers and visitors of various backgrounds a different experience of Bomas, aside from the standard traditional dance performances and homestead display

Certainly, Bomas has seemingly lost its appeal due to a failure to make a paradigm shift from a more conventional approach to cultural preservation in the increasingly competitive cultural tourism sector.

This has created a sense of monotony among visitors who have been desirous of savouring something new at Bomas, as they seek extra knowledge of various cultures.
