Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) on Friday, September 30 officially handed over the transferred functions back to the Nairobi County Government.

In a ceremony witnessed by the outgoing Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, NMS Director General Mohamed Badi handed over functions that include county health services, transport, public works, utilities, and ancillary services, and county planning and development which were taken by the National Government in 2020.

"I would like to thank Governor Sakaja for helping us guide NMS to what we have achieved today. It has been a rigorous and remarkable two years culminating to this very moment as we officially handover the transferred functions back to the county government," Badi said.

'NMS performed well'

The NMS boss said he performed his tasks quite well across the four transferred functions with tangible positive outcomes that Nairobi residents can attest to.

"As I pass the baton to the governor, I remain devoted to supporting the county government in the execution of its mandate and realisation of the aspirations of the people of Nairobi and Kenya at large," he said.

On his part, Governor Johnson Sakaja promised to retain all staff that worked under NMS.

"There is no former NMS staff or former county gov’t staff, you are all staff of the Nairobi County government and you will work together as equals. We will have space for everybody," he said.

The governor is now fully in charge of the city having a control of 14 functions of the county government.

NMS' tenure will end on October 24, 2022.
