Fundraising for boda boda riders in Nyamira County has been postponed to Thursday next week, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

The DP on Twitter wrote: "After consultations with MPs Kemosi, Mose,Nyamoko, the bodaboda sacco and church leadership who had invited us, we have postponed the two functions in Nyamira County to Thursday next week. The disruptive dispersal by police of Kenyans engaged in economic empowerment is unnecessary."

Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba cancelled DP Ruto’s planned fundraiser for boda boda operators.

A contingent of security officers, including General Service Unit’s anti-riot squad, were deployed to the Kebirigo Primary School in West Mugirango Constituency where the fundraiser was to be held today.

The officers brought down the tents and dais that DP Ruto was to use to address the boda boda riders.

When members of the public arrived at the grounds, police used tear gas to disperse them.

The fundraisers were cancelled over alleged failure to notify authorities in advance according to new guidelines issued on Wednesday by the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua.

Kinyua said the decision to regulate public meetings was agreed upon by the National Security Advisory Council owing to recent deadly political violence witnessed in Murang’a County where two youth groups clashed.
