Learning at ECDE centres in Nyamira county which had been paralyzed for the last three weeks resumed yesterday.

Normal teaching resumed after the county government renewed the contracts of the affected teachers following a protest from parents and local leaders led by the county woman representative Jerusa Momanyi.

In a circular written by the county chief officer in the department of Education and Vocational Training Zipporah Orina, she asked the affected teachers to continue teaching in their respective schools awaiting communication from the county public service board.

“Nyamira county is in the process of extending contracts for 403 ECDE teachers, Phase 2 category B and Phase 3 whose contracts expired on 31st January 2024. The extension of contract will be effective from February 2024” read part of the circular dated February 6.

A spot check by People Daily in some schools yesterday established that normalcy at the ECDE learning centers has been restored back.

Speaking to People Daily in Nyamira town yesterday, the woman rep welcomed the move of renewing the contracts asked the county government to discard the culture of employing ECDE teachers on contract basis.

“I am happy that the county government has renewed the contracts of the ECDE teachers but what we are demanding is that the teachers be employed on pensionable and permanent terms. Jerusa said that the learners had lost a lot for not being attended, a situation which could have not occurred if the teachers were employed on permanent terms .
