Nyeri County Woman Representative Rahab Mukami has called for a major crackdown on producers of illicit brews and a drug being sold in the Nyeri Majengo area known as 'Kete' which when consumed is leaving the young men looking like zombies and unable to work.

Mukami said that both old and young men from the Mt Kenya region have excessively consumed the illicit brews and said that they will no longer allow the sale of brews and drugs in the region which has continued to destroy the men from the region.

"Our husbands, sons, and brothers have consumed the illicit brews for a long time which has left many of them neglecting their duties in their families and we can no longer allow this to continue," Mukami said.

Mukami who had met the women leadership of AIPCA Mukaro diocese at Kangubiri to discuss how to save the boychild from the region said that women from the region are no longer siring babies as the men have indulged in the abuse of drugs and illicit brews.

"This week I went to Othaya hospital and the doctors lamented that there are no expectant mothers in the delivery rooms and asked me to urge mothers to give birth," she stated.

While acknowledging that the victims are full of potential to do better in society Mukami noted that women have been left with the burden of catering for their families by doing menial jobs as their husbands who are supposed to be the breadwinners report to the drinking dens every morning and spend there all day.

"I'm calling upon the administration, the Church and the government to join hands and start a campaign to completely eradicate the illicit brews in order to save the boychild," she said.

She also urged the County government not to issue licenses to producers of such brews. She, however, claimed that some powerful individuals from the previous regime are behind the production of the said brews and thus their licenses should not be renewed.

Fracidia Mutahi a woman leader said that they are ready to storm into all the brewing dens and destroy them.

"We will not remain silent anymore and we are going to mobilize the Church to join in the war against the consumption of illicit brews," she said.
