Reactions expected as UN approves Kenya-Haiti security mission

The United Nations Security Council has approved a Kenyan security mission to strife-torn Haiti.

The UN voted on the night of Monday, October 2, 2023, in New York to approve the security mission that will see 1,000 police officers deployed in the Caribbean nation.

The UN Security Council adopted the resolution with a recorded vote of 13 in favour and 2 abstentions from Russia and China. The council also authorized the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to help secure critical infrastructure and transit hubs such as airports, ports, schools, hospitals, and key intersections.

“With this action, the Security Council has ignited a beacon of hope for the beleaguered people of Haiti," Martin Kimani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Kenya, said.

With the approval, reactions across the political divide and other stakeholder groups are still expected since this has been an issue of national interest.

Ruto's Nyanza trip

With President William Ruto's confirmed trip to the Nyanza region later in the week confirmed, eyes will be keen on how the local leaders will receive the news.

The head of state is scheduled to start the visit on Friday, with the first stop in Homa Bay County, where he is expected to commission several projects before moving to Migori, Kisumu, and Siaya counties.

Leaders from the region who are expected to spearhead Ruto's visit include Eliud Owalo, the Information, Communication, and Technology Cabinet Secretary.
