The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) became the latest party to crack the whip on its rebellious Ward Reps for gross misconduct.

In a letter seen by the People Daily, the party has imposed fines on its  Members of County Assembly who have been going against the party position ranging from Sh 100,000 to Sh1 million.

Majority of those fined are from Nairobi - with Nyamira and Bungoma having two MCAs each disciplined by the party.

Among the accusations the party has levelled against the MCAs in Nairobi is on the ongoing budget tussle where they are accused of going against the party’s position.

A letter from the Party’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna confirmed the disciplinary actions imposed on the 16 MCAs.

From Bungoma county, MCA’S Majimbo Okumu and Violet Makhanu were fined the least amount of Sh100 000 while in Nyamira county, those fined are Duke Masira and Callen Atuya.

Atuya was fined Sh500, 000, suspended for 3-6 months and barred from holding any office in the party.

In Nairobi county those fined are Cecilia Ayot, Wilson Ochola, Nicholas Okumu, Hafsa Khalif, Maurice Gari, Carolyne Mayunzu, Milicent Okatch, David Okello, Haji Niko, Redson Otieno, Jared Okode and David Mbithi.

Among the MCAs from Nairobi fined Sh1million are Ochola, Okumu, Gari, Mayunzu, Otieno, Okode and Mbithi.

“If they gave us the official party position, we couldn’t be where we are today”, said a Ward Rep who sought anonymity.

So dire are the punishments that the named MCAs have also been de-whipped from the various committees for a period of between 3-6 months.
