The stage is set for the battle to lead the watchdog Senate committee with political bigwigs positioning themselves to shine ahead of 2022 General Election.

Majority and minority parties in the Senate yesterday formally tabled names of proposed members to the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).

Jubilee Party is the Majority party in the House while National Super Alliance (NASA) is the minority party.

The committee will play similar roles as those of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Public Investment Committee (PIC) of the National Assembly, albeit at the county level. The chairmanship is a preserve of the minority side, NASA.

Among those proposed to be members of the committee includes Senators Mithika Lithuri (Meru), Hargura Godana (Marsabit) Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and Millicent Omanga (Nominated).

Others are Sam Ongeri (Kisii), Ledama ole Kina (Narok), Ochillo Ayacko (Migori) and Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta).

Although the Senate Standing Orders do not specify who should chair the oversight committee, by convention in last Parliament, Senators agreed that the position should be chaired by a member from the minority side.

Sources who spoke in confidence told People Daily said that Ayacko and Ongeri (pictured) have shown interest to chair the influential committee.

It will be the second time Ongeri will be trying his luck to chair the prestigious committee that oversights county governments and their executives.
