Police Kiambu have restated that wearing of masks remains mandatory until the spread and infection of the Covid-19 pandemic is fully contained.

They warned that anyone flouting the health protocols will be arrested and prosecuted noting that it was unfortunate to see locals relaxed following the apparent drop of new infections.

Speaking on Wednesday during a Covid-19  prevention sensitization march in Kikuyu town which was a hot spot one month ago, area Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Monicah Wangari said coronavirus is yet to be contained warning that the government would watch as a few people continue to expose others to the risks of infection.

"As President Uhuru persistently reminds Kenyans, personal responsibility is the only way the pandemic can be contained and hence nobody should flout all the laid down protocols, chief among them wearing masks and washing hands regularly," she said.

The multiagency sensitization event saw uniformed police officers and public health officials as well as public health volunteers march along the streets of Kikuyu town before addressing the media at the Kikuyu bus terminus.

The ACC said similar sensitization events will be held across the sub-county before being replicated in the entire county.

She cautioned Kenyans against gambling with their lives by disobeying the Government's directives on containing the killer disease.

"It's a personal responsibility to sanitize, wear a mask, observe social distancing and most importantly stay at home if necessary in order to avoid contracting the disease whose cure is yet to be found," she said.

Locals said the government should avail relief food supplies to locals affected by the effects of the disease.

They said that hundreds of locals have lost their livelihoods and hence require material support adding that many of them are going without food for days.

A police officer who spoke on grounds of anonymity said the disease can only be put under control if the general populace becomes hygienically disciplined and adhere to all the government directives.

"Some of us dent the image of the police service when they indiscriminately arrest innocent people without digging to establish why they are not wearing masks and try to convince them the importance of wearing one," he said.

He challenged his counterparts to be role models in the war against the disease noting that most of them are prone to exposing innocent citizens to harassment in the name of implementing government protocols.

"Apart from advising and sensitizing the community on the dangers of the pandemic, the government should also avail free masks and medically approved sanitizers," he said.

The officer said the Covid-19 mitigation measures put by the Government had lowered the number of positive patients and called for stricter implementation of the same.

Matatu operators urged governor James Nyoro to consider establishing public sanitization booths in all bus and matatu terminus in the county.
They hailed Nyoro for being at the forefront in the fight against Covid-19.

The Kiambu County Government has been singled out by the council of governors as the best prepared in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

Recently, Nyoro said several institutions have been earmarked as isolation centres for medical officers handling Covid-19 cases in the county.
