COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has weighed in on the age-debate that was sparked by a recent comment by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Atwoli stated that it makes no sense for youths to lead a country when there are old people.

In an apparent campaign for ODM leader Raila Odinga, the trade unionist argued that American President Joe Biden is way older than the opposition chief.

"How can the young lead a country when there are older people? The youth should be protected and raised till they are mature. Americans have elected Joe Biden, who is 78 years old, older than Raila Amolo Odinga. Old people can bring the country together, young people can burn the country," he said.

Speaking during an event where he conferred Nakuru Municipality with the city status, President Uhuru Kenyatta shared sentiments akin to those of Francis Atwoli.

The President told youths that leadership is not determined by age as they have been made to believe.

He stated that a good leader is judged by his brain and not his age.

"To the youths, I respectfully urge you to brainstorm and avoid rush decisions. Making rush decisions will only land you in a ditch. They will tell you that someone is not fit for some position because he his old.

Leadership is in the brain. It is not a sprint race but a marathon, You will run fast and exhaust yourself while the old man will move steadily and pass you," he said.
