Over 50 miners presumed dead after a mine collapsed in Congo
Over 50 gold miners in Congo are feared to have died after an informal gold mine caved in, Reuters reported.
The cave is said to have collapsed under the weight of a downpour on Friday, burying over 50 miners.
Consequently, the mayor of Kamituga town in Mpila Alaxandre Bundya ordered two days of mourning. Other politicians in Congo also expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
The Governor of South Kivu, where the mine is located, said operations to retrieve bodies and to rescue any survivors are on going.
“The search continues to identify our deceased compatriots, bring assistance and implement measures to prevent such incidents from repeating,” Kasi’s office said in a statement.
Congo has a population of over 2 million local miners, according to a report by the World Bank.
