International Swimming Federation (Fina) has made good its warning and temporarily suspended the Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) for defiance of directives.

Fina, who had issued a second ultimatum to KSF to hold elections before October 30 or face a ban from all swimming activities, seems to be angered by the slow progress in Kenya.

The first deadline elapsed on June 30 and as it stands, Kenya might miss out on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The statement from Fina said the global swimming body has temporarily  suspended the National Federations of Kenya and Federated States of Micronesia, until “proper elections are held in accordance with the Fina Rules.”

The move came following a Fina bureau meeting in Kuwait City on Friday under the presidency of Julio Maglione. The meeting coincided with the World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships.

Kenya has been blamed for failing to put it’s house in order, and specifically the Interim Management Committee (IMC), which has failed to come up with measures aimed at beating the deadline.

The draft constitution was expected to be handed to FINA and CANA by August 13. They were then to adopt a constitution before issuing a notice for election by October 5 and national polls to be held before October 30 as directed by FINA, all deadlines that were never adhered to.

Besides that, management issues have been highlighted with stakeholders still waiting for the forensic audit on the KSF accounts which have not been audited in the last decade.
