Plans in place to enhance security detail for Karua, Gachagua

The security detail of the Azimio La Umoja and Kenya Kwanza presidential running mates will be enhanced following their nomination.

The National Police Service is expected to conduct a risk assessment to establish the threats and assign additional officers based on the assessment.

Deputy President William Ruto of Kenya Kwanza on Sunday named Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate while Azimio La Umoja’s Raila Odinga yesterday nominated Martha Karua as his running mate at a function held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), Nairobi.

Formal application The NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso however yesterday said the candidates were expected to make a formal application to the service which will be considered.

The police headquarters said the issue of security of the candidates was taken seriously. Shioso however said they will be guided by law in the allocations but said that owing to the sensitivity of such issues, they could not disclose the number of officers which will be allocated to the candidates.

Over 40 candidates have thrown their hats in the ring but the top contenders remain Ruto and Raila.
