Police arrest teen ferrying illegal ethanol

Police in Eldoret are holding two people, one of them a 19-year-old teenager, who were arrested while transporting ethanol valued at more than Sh600,000.

The consigment is  suspected to have originated from Uganda.

The teenager, who was the driver and his 24-year-old co-driver, were arrested on the Eldoret-Webuye highway while on their way to deliver the consignment containing 55 20-litre jerricans of ethanol to the owner at an Eldoret estates.

Turbo sub-county deputy police commander Chris Wesonga said they had also impounded the vehicle, Toyota KDJ 639 C that was used in transporting the chemicals.

“We are holding the driver and co-driver who are now helping the police with investigations. Our officers have launched a manhunt for the owner of the consignment before we take all of them to court for engaging in illicit trade,” said Wesonga.

He said the vehicle had earlier been flagged down by their counterparts from Lumakanda Police Station in Kakamega County but they ignored the order to stop.
