Police in Kitale have nabbed three suspects in connection to a fake Internally Displaced People (IDP) compensation scheme in Trans Nzoia.

Trans Nzoia County officer in charge of operations Chemonges Ndiema said the bogus IDPs had also violated the public health guidelines on social distancing by having an overcrowded meeting in a market hall.

Mr. Ndiema said genuine IDPs were paid, and warned against such schemes.

He  said the three officials Evans Wekesa, Joseph Wanjala and John Koroto who serve as Chairman, Treasurer and Organizing Secretary of the fake compensation scheme will remain in police custody until Tuesday to be arraigned.

Their arrest elicited mixed reaction with the Chairman Of Kiboroa Squatters Alliance Moses Masinde warning that anyone extorting money from unsuspecting members of public on the pretext of being given land should be reported to police.

Speaking in Kitale, Masinde lauded the Police for netting the suspects and said other emerging groups masquerading IDP leaders out to con residents be made to account for millions of shillings stolen from the poor.

Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Sam Ojwang said the government will not tolerate engineers of illegal schemes roaming about with fictitious IDP lists to dub innocent Kenyans of compensation.

‘’ We will not allow these  bogus individuals  to divert the Government stand on the fate of  IDPs as  compensation funds as there is no more compensation. Any purported list of IDPS is their own fabrication and we are sounding a warning to them to stop before the law catches up with them’’, he said.
