The wife of missing Dutch businessman Tob Cohen was on Wednesday evening arrested for questioning over the whereabouts of her husband.

Detectives probing the disappearance of Cohen now  believe that his wife coached witnesses to lie as part of cover-up to an alleged well-orchestrated abduction.

Police believe that the abduction may have possibly led to the elimination of the tycoon  who was reported to have gone missing on July 20.

The investigators, who arrested Sarah Wairimu Kamotho, 51, at her Kitisuru residence, now say its possible Cohen may have been kidnapped from his residence and taken by the wife and her associates to an unknown place where the kidnap “may have probably turned  to be murder”.

Weekend in custody

Although police wanted her detained for 14 days, Kiambu Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichohi ordered that she be detained at Muthaiga Police Station until Monday when she will deliver a ruling.

Inspector Maxwel Otieno, from the homicide unit, who is leading the probe, said preliminary investigations links Wairimu, who he wants detained for another two weeks to facilitate further investigations, to her husband’s disappearance and possible murder.

“It’s highly probable that  Cohen might have been kidnapped from his residence and taken by the respondent (Wairimu) to an unknown place which (the) kidnap may have probably turned to murder. Preliminary investigations established that the respondent coached some witnesses to give false testimony in the account of movement of Cohen,” Otieno said.

The detective, in a sworn affidavit before Gichohi, said some witnesses, who include the couple’s employees, had recanted their testimonies and “gave true version of what transpired”.

Wairimu, in an interview with People Daily last week, exuded confidence that Cohen, who she claimed was full of surprises, was fine.

“I have no doubts that my husband is somewhere, safe. I know him since we have been together for almost 30 years,” she said.

Further, the detective said their investigations have also established that Cohen had talked to some of his friends informing them that his life was in danger.

The couple is said to have had limited peace in their marriage that led to a divorce cause No. 35/2019 filed by Cohen.
