Police officers in Trans Nzoia are holding 56 people who were found partying on Saturday night.

Police reports indicated that the 56 who were part of the more than 200 levelers busted at the EPIC bar in Kitale Town around 11:00 am.

Trans Nzoia county police commander Fredrick Ochieng confirmed the incident saying the owner of the bar was also arrested during the operation and will be arraigned before court on Monday for operating the bar without a license.

‘‘The 56 persons arrested will be arraigned before court Monday for violating curfew rules while the bar owner will be charged for operating the bar without a valid license past the curfew hours’’, he said.

The police commander in an interview with the People Daily warned bar owners flouting covid-19 directives that the government will not hesitate to revoke their licenses.

The Police boss noted that most bar owners had purposely continued to disregard the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and warned that stiffer penalties would be undertaken.

“Those persons operating bars and selling alcohol, we have taken note. Most likely your license will be permanently revoked,” said Ochieng.

Trans Nzoia county Commissioner Sam Ojwang said ‘‘the constitution had not been suspended to allow people visiting bars at odd hours and demanding to drink to their full capacity. No one has ever come back from death to tell tales and so we will be enforcing the rules to the letter’’.

He added that the dusk to dawn curfew is still in force and anyone flouting the rules will be dealt with accordingly.

“As the co-chairman of the county emergency response team of coronavirus virus I am putting emphasis on strict adherence to protocols which include individual responsibility especially this December holiday,’’ he added.
