Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has said he has what it takes to lead Kenya to the next level.

While enumerating the achievements that Kenya has made since independence, Raila said the country needs an engineer to take it to great prosperity.

"I have what it takes to take Kenya to the next level.

"Kenya needs an engineer so that it can catch up with the countries that it was in the same level of development with in 1963.

"With team effort, I can be able to identify talents in different fields so that our country can take off," Raila said when he appeared on a local television on Wednesday evening.

He credited Kenya's first President Jomo Kenyatta for leading the country to independence, Daniel Moi for education, Mwai Kibaki for Vision 2030 and Uhuru Kenyatta for infrastructural development.

"Uhuru has set the country ready for take-off. It now needs reengineering to be where its peers, during independence, are at the moment," Raila said.

He noted that youth needed jobs and that the informal sector had to be formalised so that it could get direct support from government.

Raila declared interest in next year's presidential election on December 10 during Azimio la Umoja rally at Kasarani.

Infotrak poll, this week, placed him one per cent ahead of William Ruto (32%) as next year's presidential race gathers momentum.
