IEBC announces timeframe for final mass voter registration exercise
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the second and final Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise will kick off in January next year.
Speaking on Monday during a two-day stakeholder engagement meeting with the political parties liaison committee held in Maanzoni, Athi River Sub County, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati also revealed that during the first Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise that was conducted between October 4, 2021, and November 5, 2021, 1,519,294 eligible Kenyans enrolled as new voters.
“The commission is currently planning for a second and last round of Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise in January 2022. That will be the final voter drive and we ask politicians to woe Kenyans and mostly the youth to come out and register as voters,” he pleaded.
“It’s the basis upon which the political rights to vote and stand for any elective office is realized,” he added.
He revealed that IEBC marked the start of the 2022 general elections cycle in Makueni County on October 15, 2018, with the launch of continuous voter registration (CVR) where 180,938 new voters were registered by August 31, 2021.
The Commission Chair further asked Kenyans to pick pending identity cards in order to register as voters.
“I am told there are millions of uncollected IDs lying with the administration, in various centres, please encourage their owners to go pick so that they can get a chance to register as voters,” he said.
