Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has officially announced that he will be vying for the presidency in the 2022 general elections.

Raila, 76, made the much-awaited announcement at Kasarani Stadium on Friday, December 10 during the Azimio la Umoja event after months of speculation.

“I do hereby accept to present myself as a presidential candidate at the presidential election on 9th of August 2022 following the request and unanimous decision by this Azimio la Umoja event,” Raila said.

In his declaration speech, Raila also said he will use the Azimio la Umoja Movement as his political vehicle in the quest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"To put our country on the path of lasting unity, stability and prosperity, I hereby announce the launch of the Azimio la Umoja Movement,” he said amid cheers from his supporters.

Raila further said he will prioritise unity agenda, teachers' welfare, national healthcare, employment and economic recovery.

“I ask for nothing, and I will never ask for anything, except the opportunity to serve,” he said during his speech in Kasarani Stadium.

Raila also took the opportunity to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for his sense of patriotism and being at the centre of a dialogue that led to their historic handshake.

"I must pay homage to my brother President Uhuru Kenyatta for the foresight and sense of patriotism in initiating the dialogue that led to the handshake. It takes a seasoned statesman to shake the hand of his rival. I thank him," Odinga said.

The former premier's declaration means that he will be making the fifth attempt at the top job.

Raila is now expected to face off with Deputy President William Ruto.
