Deputy President  (DP) William Ruto yesterday hit out at Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi accusing him of imposing Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Mt Kenya East residents.

The DP who visited the region barely three weeks after the former premier toured the area to rally support for his presidential campaigns, accused the county boss of trying to advance politics of self interest by forcing the region to support Raila’s presidential bid.

“We are telling Kiraitu to stop acting like a political broker because people of Meru are not fools to be pushed to elect a presidential candidate, who wants to inherit a government that he did not make or form,” said Ruto.

Backed by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, Imenti South MP Kathuri Murungi and Rigathi Kachagua Mathira legislator the politicians accused Kiraitu against selling Mt Kenya East political soul to ODM ahead of the General Election.

“We are telling Kiraitu that Meru and Mt.Kenya East will only support Ruto and not Raila and if he pushes us further towards that direction then we are telling him to prepare to lose his seat terribly,”said Kathuri.

Political forces

He told residents at Githongo, Nkubu, Charia and Meru town after kicking his two-day tour of Meru County that governors should avoid being misused by political forces to advance Raila’s agenda.

Kiraitu and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya,  on October 18 hosted Raila for his Azimio La Umoja campaign in Meru, where they urged locals to support the ODM chief’s presidential bid.

Kiraitu and  Munya who have been bitter rivals, buried the hatchet and declared that  they will support Raila.

Speaking to the electorates during the Azimio rally, Kiraitu asked Ameru people to vote for Raila in the 2022 General Election, with the promise that he will revive the miraa market.

“Baba (Raila) is well-known for the fight of the country’s second liberation, would you want him to fight for miraa? Do you want Baba to fight for the youth? You people are the real army for Raila,” Kiraitu said.

“You know that Baba (Raila) is our defender and he has fought for Kenya’s democracy for years. His time to lead the country come next year has come,” Munya said then.

Yesterday, Ruto said he was the only man who remained with Uhuru in 2013 while Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Musalia Mudavadi abandoned him.

While selling the bottom-up-economic model, Ruto assured the residents that his government will focus on growth and job creation.
