Polls agency resumes continuous voter registration
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has resumed the constituency office-based Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and revision of voter’s roll exercise for new registration and transfer of registration status.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati reiterated that the CVR exercise is for eligible persons, who have not registered as voters and also to allow change of particulars and deletion of dead voters from the voter register.
“Commission also plans to conduct voter registration for citizens residing outside the country for 15 days beginning December 6,” said Chebukati.
Through a statement, the IEBC boss noted that before commencement of the exercise, the commission will, in the Kenya Gazette, publish names of registration centres and countries where registration and voting will take place and the period of registration.
Electoral agency will also subject the 1,519,294 new voter’s record, who registered during the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration to a duplication process to compare biometric data of the new voters with the existing 19,668,968 voters for purposes of eliminating multiple records.
Reputable firm
Regarding auditing of the voters register, Chebukati disclosed that IEBC will engage a professional and reputable firm to conduct an audit of the register to verify its accuracy and recommend mechanisms of enhancing the accuracy of the register and updating it.
“This exercise will be conducted after closure of the continuous voter registration and at least six months before the date of the General Election,” said Chebukati.
Biometric data
He at the same time announced that the commission will open the register of voters for verification of biometric data by members of the public in their polling stations for a period of 30 days to enable them correct omissions.
Chebukati said after completion of the verification exercise, the polls agency will publish a gazette notice not later than February 28, 2022 to pave way for commencement of inspection and biometric verification of data.
“Commission will certify and publish the register of voters for the 2022 elections by June next year with details of the name of County Assembly Ward and total number of registered voters,” he stated.
During the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registered exercise conducted from October 4 to November 5, IEBC managed to register 1,519,294 new voters and some of 421,057 voters, who were transferring their registration details.
