Battle for the Amani National Congress (ANC) secretary-general kicked off yesterday after a party activist declared himself the new secretary general.

The office was left vacant after Barrack Muluka resigned on Wednesday.

Fred Muka arrived at the ANC offices in Loyangalani Road in Lavington yesterday at mid-day on a motorbike, and addressed a handful of journalists by the roadside after being denied entry into the premises.

He then left on the same motorbike accompanied by a supporter.

“The exit of Barrack Muluka opens a door for a fresh start. To drive the Musalia Mudavadi and ANC agenda, our party needs a fearless, vibrant, brilliant and loyal youth for this position.

A youth that can take a bullet on behalf of the party,” he said and fled the scene as the party’s national chairman, Kelvin Lunani, called for calm and patience  as the process to fill vacant positions was underway.

Muka claimed the choice of Eliud Owalo to replace Muluka was not done properly.

Owalo is Raila Odinga’s former aide. He contested the Kibra by-election in November last year on an ANC ticket.

Conspiracy theories

Lunani noted in a statement that the party was now caught in unnecessary speculation and conspiracy theories from its detractors and competitors.

“The latter category should keep off internal ANC affairs and reserve their gossip and intrigues to issues that bedevil their own parties.

“For members, followers and supporters of ANC, I reassure them that all is alright with their party.

There is no vacuum following the resigntation of Muluka as the party machinery has already seamlessly kicked in.

We should, therefore, guard against designs to disorient and disorganise us from our steadfast loyalty to our party and party leader,Musalia Mudavadi,” he added.

He said the Party’s National Executive Council views the resignation as an opportunity to re-engineer it in preparation for internal elections and 2022 General Election.

“We therefore appeal to ANC adherents to recommit themselves to party ideals and the vision of our party leader Hon Musalia Mudavadi.

We also appreciate the service Barrack gave to the party for three years and wish him success in future vocations,” he said.

Lunani said ANC is not the only party that’s restructuring, however, insisting that whereas this is the situation, the difference in their political entity is that they are engaged in a smooth participatory process.

“We credit this to an extremely sober and committed membership, followers and supporters,” he added.

The ANC Constitution, he observed, provides for an elaborate mechanism and processes of filling vacant positions.
