ODM leader Raila Odinga yesterday commissioned a Sh65 billion low-cost housing project in Kisumu.

Raila termed the project a major milestone in an effort to provide decent housing to all.

“I am happy to inaugurate this project that will ensure the housing crisis in the city of Kisumu is addressed,’’ he said

The units will meet the different clients' needs ranging from bed-sitters to four-bedroom units.

Prices range from Sh1 million to Sh4.5 million to be paid over a 15-year period.

Priority will be given to tenants displaced from the original estate, the majority of the employees of the Kisumu County Government.

The low-cost housing units are part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration Big Four agenda.

Raila urged financial institutions to promote measures that can enable more people acquire the units.

Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the county government was determined to invest in affordable  housing to ensure low income earners acquire homes.

“We are also keen on enacting measures to control and regulate land by holding investors,” he said.

But the governor decried investors hoarding land for speculative purposes saying such practices should not be encouraged.

Nyong’o also asked developers to complete projects more quickly in order to help ease property prices.
