Ukambani region governors yesterday kicked off campaigns for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid even as they intensified calls on Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to join Azimio La Umoja.

The county chiefs, who were in a company of professionals from the region, launched a grain value addition plant at Makindu in Makueni County and addressed a rally.

Governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) and Charity Ngilu of Kitui urged the community to rally behind Raila for the sake of development in the region.

The trio later opened Kikima Health facility before addressing a rally at Mbumbuni.

Kibwana said strengthening devolution was the best way to achieve the bottom-up economic model.

“We have all reasons to support Azimio because Raila fought for 2010 Constitution that brought devolution while others opposed it. The real bottom-up economy will be realised by strengthening devolution,” said Kibwana.

Create wealth

Kibwana said Kenyans had a choice of voting for Deputy President William Ruto, whom he described as an enemy of devolution, and Raila.

Ngilu said the Kamba community stood the best chance of being in the next government by supporting Azimio.

“If Raila brings 35 per cent of the national budget to the counties we will not be talking about poverty,” said Ngilu.

Mutua said time had come to create wealth and employment opportunities for the people.

“It is time for change of leadership so that we change livelihoods,” said Mutua.
