Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga has taken a clear lead in popularity in Nairobi at 50 per cent, a new survey by TIFA shows.

In the poll results released on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, TIFA ranks Raila's main rival William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party second with 25 per cent.

Ruto, who enjoys support from over 10 parties affiliated with the Kenya Kwanza coalition, has lost some ground according to the data. He garnered 26 per cent in the polls conducted by TIFA in May against Raila's 41 per cent.

Roots party's George Wajackoyah made a surprise entry to the top three with a 7 per cent popularity. Agano party's David Mwaure is ranked fourth with 1 per cent.

Wajackoyah, who has promised to legalise bhang if elected, is touted as the third horse in the race slated for August 9.

According to the study, 18 per cent of voters in the city are undecided, a drop from 32 per cent recorded last month.

TIFA conducted 632 interviews across all the 17 constituencies in Nairobi. The survey's margin of error was plus or minus 3.8 per cent.

Raila's Azimio coalition leads in popularity

In terms of party popularity, the study shows Raila's ODM and Azimio la Umoja are both more popular than their rivals, UDA and Kenya Kwanza. ODM party leads with 30 per cent against UDA's 22 per cent. On coalitions, Azimio leads with 46 per cent against Kenya Kwanza's 24 per cent.

At the same time, TIFA on Tuesday ranked Johnson Sakaja as the most popular gubernatorial candidate in Nairobi.

With only 48 days to the August 9 elections, the poll indicates that UDA party candidate is leading in popularity at 40 per cent followed closely by his main challenger Polycarp Igathe of Jubilee at 32 per cent.

TIFA said Sakaja has more female supporters at 41 per cent as compared to Igathe's 24 per cent.

"There were no major differences in the support for two candidates by age group," TIFA said.
