Doctors have recommended that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga (pictured) takes an extended rest as they continue to monitor his health condition.

Consultant neurosurgeon David Oluoch-Olunya said in a statement yesterday that Raila was undergoing investigations with a team of doctors and had been advised to rest.

“Raila walked in for a routine medical test at the Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday after feeling some fatigue. He has had a rigorous campaign and needs to have some check up. He is still undergoing some further investigations. We are continuing to monitor his condition and no doubt he will be able to address the country in due course. He is in good spirits,” said Dr Olunya.

However, Raila in a Tweet last evening said he is feeling better. “Thank you for the overwhelming messages of goodwill. I’m feeling much much better now and following doctors orders. Asanteni".

The People Daily established that before checking into Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday, Raila had visited a doctor’s clinic at the Fifth Avenue suites on Ngong road after experiencing fatigue. The opposition leader, according to reliable sources, visited the doctor at around 11am.

He was then advised to visit the Nairobi Hospital for further tests, upon which he was admitted into the North Wing, usually a preserve of important patients who cherish the privacy and high end facilities at their disposal in the wards.

Tuesday, Raila’s elder brother and spokesman of the Odinga family Dr Oburu Oginga, said that doctors who observed the politician recommended that he be admitted.

“He went to hospital yesterday (Tuesday) for a check up and never went back home. Doctors recommended further tests on him,” said Oburu.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker, however, allayed fears that the opposition chief’s condition was serious.

“A normal human being must get sick. There is absolutely noth-ing wrong with that. My brother Raila is human and can fall sick. He complained of backache and pain in the body. We cannot say that it is Covid-19 until the results are out,” he said.

Raila’s wife Ida, Oburu, sister Ruth Odinga and other family members visited him at the hospital yesterday morning.

“We are waiting for the report. His doctor is supposed to give further details on whether it is Covid-19 or not. There is no cause for alarm and I urge all his supporters to remain calm,” Oburu added
