A couple whose property was demolished last November in Westlands, Nairobi can temporarily breathe a sigh of relief after government records revealed the land belongs to the man’s father Batuk Shah.

Ministry of Lands officials said that despite rogue officials erasing most of the information about the land, details about its ownership are intact.

Senior assistant Chief Land Registrar David Nyandoro said Niraj Shah and his wife, Avani, still have the opportunity to get back their land.

Nyandoro said there is a separate file containing details of the property, including the land reference number at the Ministry of Lands. Shah’s property was registered under title deed number IR250040.

“There have been attempts to see the ownership of this land change,”Nyandoro said when he appeared before Nairobi County Assembly Planning Committee.

He also tabled before the committee an allegedly forged title deed indicating the property belonged to Lariak Properties Ltd.

The title deed indicates the property was registered under a different title deed, number IR250041, and that it belonged to one Samuel Chepkwony. The registrar of companies lists Chepkwony, Nathaniel Kipkemboi, John Rotich and Joel Kiplang’at, as the owners of Lariak Properties.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had written a letter to the Lands ministry seeking to check the authenticity of the title deed.
