Residents want government to compensate them for land
Hundreds of residents of Borabu and North Mugirango constituencies whose land was hived off for the construction of a connector highway want the State to compensate them.
The demands come a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta officially commissioned the 33km Chepilat-Ikonge-Chabera Road whose construction started about five years ago.
The demand for compensation is among the issues the residents want the Head of State to address within the next two years before the country enters the electioneering period.
During the launch conducted at Ikonge Primary School, Nyamira Senator Okong’o O’Mogeni, who spoke on behalf of the residents of the two constituencies, petitioned the President to fast-track the compensation which, he said, was long
“Mr President we want to draw to your attention that the people whose land was taken for the construction of the road are yet to be compensated despite there being a programme for it. We are asking you to address the issue once and for all,” he said.
However, after being addressed over the matter, the President never committed to it but instead told local leaders to come together and draft an agenda of the people and what they wanted done for them by the State and present it to him.
Some of the residents who talked to People Daily said they were banking on the hope that political leaders will include the issue as one of those to be presented to the President.
