Respect rule of law, DP Ruto tells leaders
Deputy President has called on leaders to respect the rule of law and allow constitutionalism to take its course in Kenya.
In the remarks that seemed to be directed to leaders who attacked five High Court judges who delivered BBI judgement two weeks ago, the DP said a democratic nation is anchored not on personalities, but on constitutionalism.
"Our forefathers shed blood so that we could have a democratic nation built on the foundation of a robust Legislature, a performing Executive, independent Judiciary, and other independent institutions," the DP said.
Ruto said Kenyans should celebrate the firm foundation of the rule of law not the rule of men.
"It will be an act of great betrayal if we allowed ethnic begotry and personality cults to destroy the firm foundation of consitutionalism and the rule of law in our nation. Our forefathers should be proud to see us move forward and match forward," the DP added.
Cabinet Secretaries, governors and MPs dismissed the court ruling that stopped the BBI process.
They expressed confidence that the constitutional amendment initiative will run to its conclusion.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe described the judgment as just a temporary setback and assured Kenyans that they will get the constitutional amendments that they deserve.
"For me, I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that by this time next year or by the end of this year, we will have an amended constitution,” Kagwe said.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi said the ruling does not spell doom to the BBI process, adding that it can still be salvaged through a legal or parliamentary process.
"But my word is a word of caution that time is not on our side. There are constitutional deadlines which also have to be observed and the process in court will have its own life,” he said.
