A rowdy group of youth vandalised the dais set up by the Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition in Githurai ahead of the outfit's rally slated for Friday, March 17, 2023.

The youth stormed the venue and brought down the dais that had already been erected as Azimio leaders led by Raila Odinga and Martha Karua addressed a roadside rally in Kiambu.

Meanwhile, the leaders were forced to temporarily halt speeches after a teargas canister was lobbed at their supporters.

Raila and Kalonzo claimed the teargas canister was lobbed by the police.

The leaders warned police against being used by the government to suppress Azimio supporters.

"The officer in charge of that should have his name already at the International Criminal Court at the Hague," Kalonzo said.

Azimio leaders were in the region to rally locals to participate in the opposition's mass protests slated for Monday and meant to pile pressure on the government to lower the cost of living.

Earlier, Karua, while speaking in Ruaka, urged police officers not to disrupt the opposition's mass protests.

Karua asked police officers to cooperate and let the leaders fight for their rights. She claimed that the police were equally facing the same challenges as other Kenyans and should therefore allow them to protest peacefully without any disruptions.

"Wewe polisi nimekuambia uko na shida kama hawa wananchi wenzako, wacha nikutetee we polisi. We mtu wa security, wacha wakenya tujitetee tukiwa pamoja," she said.

Karua affirmed that the rally will be peaceful and there will be no destruction of property.

The Narc Kenya leader also cautioned protesters against vandalizing property and causing menace during the demonstrations.
