President William Ruto yesterday reiterated his administration’s commitment to digitising all government services by the end of the year.

The Head of State who spoke during the Madaraka Day celebrations on Embu County, said the government has managed to n-board more than 3.000 services online and about 5,000 are expected to be uploaded by the end of this month.

“Since the advent of e-Citizen, the government gradually increased the number of services available on the platform to 391. The rate of increase of on-boarded services is now shifting to a new radical trajectory. Today, 3,570 services have been on-boarded, and we expect 5,000 services to be online by the end of this month. Our ambition is to offer every government service on the e-Citizen platform by the end of 2023,” he said.

The President said this will enable Kenyans to access services whenever and wherever they are without the many unnecessary processes, as is currently.

Promoting transparency

“I am persuaded that technology holds the key to improving efficiency, enhancing inclusion, promoting transparency and integrity, deepening trust, and strengthening public confidence in government service provision. This is the reason why we are digitizing government information and taking public services online. On this day, I invite all Kenyans to embrace the new era of eGovernance, which empowers people everywhere, including the majority at the bottom of the socioeconomic structure, to access government services at their convenience, through their mobile devices,” he said.

Ruto pointed out that Kenya is among the earliest of its continent’s peers to establish a policy framework for data protection which includes comprehensive legislation and regulations to safeguard privacy and personal data. In December last year, the government announced that all payments for government services shall be made through the E-citizen portal.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u gazetted the portal to be the official government digital payment platform.

He also announced that more transactions were being migrated to the online payment portal, as the government unveils a new universal pay bill number.

A raft of government services has been bundled under the e-citizen, generating hundreds of thousands of transactions monthly. At the same time, Ruto announced the development of a new transport system to lower the cost of transportation.

The Head of State said plans are already in place to launch an electric vehicle public transport system by September.   by Alvin Mwangi
