Ruto: I supported Uhuru, not because he was a Kikuyu
Deputy President William Ruto has responded after his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta hinted that it is time for another community to lead Kenya.
The Deputy President was speaking at Kayole, Nairobi on Sunday during a church service at House of Hope Church invited by pastor Godfrey Migwi.
DP Ruto said it was regrettable for Kenya to resume tribal politicking after his efforts with the Head of State to heal the country of tribalism.
"After 2007/2008, my friend President Uhuru Kenyatta and I sat down and agreed to change the trend of tribal politics in Kenya. We decided to eradicate tribalism, hatred and division to replace with development agenda and improving the lives of Kenyans," said DP Ruto.
The second in command said he faced great opposition for supporting Uhuru Kenyatta, a Kikuyu, during the 2013 General Election.
"When I decided to support President Uhuru Kenyatta in his bid for Kenya's fourth President, many people including those who attended the burial yesterday differed with me. They told me there is no way I should support Uhuru Kenyatta, a Kikuyu, yet the outgoing President Mwai Kibaki was also a Kikuyu," added DP Ruto.
The DP said his decision to support Uhuru was not based on the latter's tribe but an agreement reached between the two.
Escorted by the Tanga tanga brigade, the DP also unveiled former Starehe Member of Parliament(MP) bishop Margaret Wanjiru as the 'Hustlers' candidate in the forthcoming Nairobi gubernatorial election.
Politicians who spoke during the church service criticized President Kenyatta's remarks on Kenya being led by "two tribes".
The President on Saturday during the burial of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi's mother Hannah Mudavadi said it was perhaps time that another community led Kenya, besides the two.
