TikTok CEO makes job promises as he meets Ruto, Kuria
President William Ruto on Thursday held a meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, alongside Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria
This comes hours after the Head of State promised that he would hold a meeting with the CEO of the Chinese app over monetization and content regulation in Kenya.
During the meeting, Chew committed to ensuring that content is moderated to fit community standards. He also promised to set up a Kenyan office to coordinate its operations in the continent and hire more Kenyans to work for the platform.
"In a virtual meeting with President Ruto on Thursday morning, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew committed to ensuring that content is moderated to fit community standards. This new development means that inappropriate or offensive content will be expunged from the platform," State House said in a statement.
On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, Ruto promised to meet Chew to discuss various mechanisms to moderate and reduce negative content on the platform.
"Tomorrow morning I will be speaking to TikTok CEO. I know we've had a conversation as a country around TikTok. In our meeting, we will agree on a mechanism to moderate the platform to reduce negative content and leverage on monetization that will benefit a lot more just like we have moderation capacities of other apps like Youtube and Twitter," Ruto stated.
Petition to ban TikTok
Mid this month, a petitioner tabled a motion in Parliament seeking to ban TikTok over inappropriate content.
The petitioner, Bob Ndolo, claimed that the Chinese platform had adverse negative effects on the masses due to unregulated content.
