Ruto on BBI Bill: Respect everyone’s decision and accept democratic outcomes
Deputy President William Ruto has finally broken his silence nearly a day after the National Assembly (NA) passed the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2020.
Taking to his social media pages to make a statement, the DP emphasized the need to accept democratic outcomes including the vote on the bill at the NA.
He added that everyone's view on the bill and the whole process should be treated with respect saying the unity of all Kenyans is paramount in all circumstances.
"Being a democracy, the national assembly voted on the Constitution amendment Bill and so will the senate. When the people's turn comes they too will vote and we will march on," he said.
He added; "we should respect everyone's decision & accept democratic outcomes; all views makes us stronger together."
DP Ruto's comments come even as he appears an isolated man in the whole process that seeks to change the 2010 Constitution.
His team also appears to lack a clear stand on the bill; some supporting it and others opposing it.
A total of 235 MPs voted YES for the bill at the NA, 83 voted NO and 2 abstained. A total of 320 MPs participated in the voting exercise.
Close allies of the DP also voted YES for the bill. They include MPs Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), David Sankok (Nominated), Feisal Bader (Msambweni), Khatib Mwashetani (Lungalunga), Owen Baya (Kilifi North) and many others.
Most MPs from his Rift Valley political bedrock voted NO.
The Senate on Tuesday will conduct its voting exercise on the bill.
