Ruto picks Mary Muthoni as Prisons PS nominee after Caroline Nyawira withdrew her candidature
President William Ruto has nominated Mary Muthoni as the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department of Correctional Services to replace Caroline Nyawira Murage who withdrew her candidature for the position.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the change on Thursday, November 10, 2022, after receiving a letter from the head of state.
"The President has nominated Miss Mary Muthoni Muriuki for appointment as PS for the State Department of Correctional Services. He indicates that Caroline Nyawira Murage withdrew her candidature for this position," Wetangula said.
The Speaker further said that Ruto requested the House to treat Muthoni's approval on a priority basis.
"The President seeks approval for this nominee by the National Assembly for appointment and requests that her approval is undertaken on a priority basis," Wetangula added.
The National Assembly Speaker further directed that Muthoni's nomination should be published in a newspaper before she can be vetted by the House Committee on Appointment.
"I direct the clerk on the NA to take the necessary action by notifying the nominee and the general public by placing an advert in the daily newspapers of national circulation on Friday, 11, 2022," Wetangula stated.
Ruto on November 2, 2022, unveiled his list of Principal Secretaries.
Of the 51 slots, 14 went to Rift Valley while 12 were handed to Mt Kenya region.
Western was allocated nine positions, Nyanza secured three slots, Coast four, North Eastern five and Lower Eastern three.
In the list drawn by Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei, Ruto nominated 12 women.
The PS list sparked debate on ethnic and regional balance.
