Saints Handball Club toast to maiden victory
Kisumu Saints Handball Club captain Derrick Oruko says winning the Victoria Handball Super League (VHSL) for the first time is “absolutely sensational.”
The Saints, who came close to winning the title twice but lost to league heavyweights Kisumu Academy Handball Club, were over the moon at the weekend when the league committee declared them 2019/2020 champions.
The announcement elated team members considering how clinical they were in the first leg where they went unbeaten, winning all their eight matches.
“We are extremely excited to win the league this season and you can’t imagine the feeling here in the camp- it’s absolutely sensational,” a delirious Oruko told People Sport.
Saints made their maiden appearance in the Victoria Handball Super League (VHSL) in the 2017/2018 season where against all odds they went on to finish second.
“For the last two seasons we have been finishing number three and two and the trophy has been coming, and our hard work has finally paid off.
Actually we had intentions before the start of the season, where everyone was working towards realising our set target of winning the league this season.
“So we put on a spirited fight right from Match Day One because we badly wanted to win the league.
We also wanted to change the narrative of the VHSL from being a one man show and we just did it.
“This was achieved through consistent training and team work among all members who sacrificed alot for us to realise such an achievement,” added captain Oruko.
League Director Robert Owino also concurred with Oruko saying that Saints’ explosive start to the season was an indication they were determined to challenge for the main prize.
“Kisumu Saints have been consistent since they joined the league three seasons ago and going by how they started the 2019/2020 league campaign, it was obvious this was their year. They were red-hot and clinical,” lauded Owino.
Saints league triumph, brought to the end the dominance of perennial leagues winners Kisumu Academy that had won and retained the league since its inception, four seasons ago.
