Webuye road accident.

Seven people died and 14 others were hospitalised after a lorry transporting construction material veered off the road at Kaburengu black spot and rammed into parked passenger vehicles and traders selling goods along the Eldoret – Malaba highway yesterday.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the lorry who escaped after the accident lost control of the vehicle, sending it rolling downhill before ramming into the roadside stalls and parked vehicles.

“Most of the people who have died in this accident are poor women mostly single parents who fend for their families by selling food produce at this junction.

The driver escaped as the lorry started rolling and many of us were forced to run for our lives,” said Sylvia Wetusi.

The tragic accident was confirmed by Kakamega County Deputy Police commander James Ng’etich as he regretted the loss of lives while promising justice to the families of those affected.

“Indeed seven people have lost their lives while others are admitted at various facilities within Kakamega and Bungoma counties.

We will bring those involved to book as we try to find a lasting solution to these incidents that are common around this area,” he said.

Kaburengu junction has been synonymous with tragic accidents over the years with KeNHA yet to complete the construction of a bridge.
