Siaya under sleuths radar over Sh600m
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing how officials in the Finance department in Siaya County Government may have siphoned an estimated Sh600 million, crippling major services at the devolved unit.
The George Kinoti-led unit has put 64 members of staff at the regional government including accountants and junior staff suspected to have acted as a conduit, in the alleged theft, after it emerged that their bank accounts were used to transact the cash that went missing in June 2021.
Police started grilling middle-level staffers on Friday last week while former Finance Chief Officer Denis Nyonje and staff whose accounts had deposits of between Sh4 million to Sh12 million, and who have already been sent home by Governor Colonel Rasanga pending the probe, were flown to the DCI headquarters in Nairobi for further questioning.
The loss of the funds is reported to have crippled government activities like paying workers salaries.
The devolved unit also cancelled the planned KICOSCA games held in Embu County after it was unable to raise Sh16 million to ferry its representatives and cater for their allowances.
