As the government intensifies the crackdown on illicitly brewed alcohol at Kairi village in Gatundu North Constituency due to increased alcohol-related harm, single mothers from the area have joined the fight with the objective of protecting the few remaining sober men from destruction.

The young women, some of whom were once married but separated from their husbands following devastation caused by the killer drinks, have been driven to desperate measures to tackle alcohol harm.

Using sports, the young mothers hope to woo the sober men back to the field to sharpen their talents instead of spending their leisure time at drinking dens.

Already, the single ladies have formed various football teams that have been training at Wandui Primary School, a platform they also use to sensitize locals about the dangers of alcoholism.
Illicit brews

Speaking to People Sport after a friendly match between Chania Queens and Raven Ladies FC, the young mothers said that illicit brews have not only stolen their men, leaving them struggling to parent their children, but have also destroyed a generation as the addicts are no longer active in bed.

“We formed this team to try and help fight alcoholism in this village. Most of us here are single not because we are incapable of keeping our families but because the men we have around escape responsibilities due to alcohol.

"We have a few remaining sober men whom we want to lure back to the field instead of getting destroyed by alcohol. We have also embarked on a campaign to sensitize the community on the dangers of alcohol and how sports can help people remain physically and mentally healthy,” Rose Njoroge, one of the Single Ladies team leaders, told People Sport.

The sportswomen called on the government to sustain the war against the killer drinks, which have not only resulted in deaths in the village but have also left many young men struggling with alcohol-related ailments.
