A 13-year old boy shot himself dead using his father’s pistol on Sunday.

The North-Eastern deputy regional Commander Patrick King’ori, a resident of Cherani area of Kangundo road in Nairobi county said he was preparing to report back to duty and left his Jericho pistol on the couch in the living room and went to the restroom within the house.

When he came back, the pistol was missing and when he asked his wife, she said she had not picked it.

They decided to ask their last-born son, who was in his bedroom and had locked the door from inside. “While preparing to go to work after his off duty, King’ori left his Jericho Pistol on the couch and went to the washroom within the house. When he came back, the pistol was not there. He asked his wife but she reported that she had not taken it,” a police report reads.

King’ori and his wife Judy knocked on the door of their son’s bedroom but shortly after they heard a single gunshot.

They gained access to the room by breaking the door and found the minor lying on his bed, dead after shooting himself on the head.

“He was lying on the bed and shot himself on the left side with the bullet exiting from the right side of the face slightly below the right eye,” police said.

King’ori picked the gun from the scene with two magazines loaded with 29 rounds of 9mm ammunition with one spent cartridge and handed over to the police with fear that his other son might also commit suicide. “The Jericho pistol with two magazines with 29 rounds of 9mm live ammunition and one spent cartridge were handed over by the reportee who picked them from the scene fearing his other son could use it as he was in shock,” the report further stated.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kenyatta University Hospital Mortuary as the police continue with investigations.

The scene was visited by officers from the DCI Ruai and sub-County Commander for Njiru.

The incident happened a day after a 21-year-old man also shot himself dead using his father’s firearm at their residence in Gigiri, Nairobi on Saturday.

A civilian firearm holder Robert Kiriako aged 53 years reported that his son Hanky Babu Kiriako, an online writer, had locked himself in the servants quarters before he turned the gun to himself.

“Detectives visited the scene and broke the door when they found the deceased had shot himself on the head while seated. The Ceska pistol was found lying on his lap and one spent cartridge was found in the house,” police said.

In May this year, the son of former nominated MP David Ole Sankok shot himself dead at the family residence in Narok town.

Narok County criminal investigation officer Mwenda Ethaiba was quoted saying the teenager shot himself on the chin at their home in Ewaso Ngiro Trading centre, dying on the spot.

Meanwhile, Police in Mombasa are investigating an incident in which a man reportedly strangled his two children to death before torching their bodies in Bombolulu area of Nyali Sub County.

The suspect identified as Jackson Chacha 58, is said to have first killed his two sons by manual strangulation, before dousing kerosene in their bedroom and lit a candle to burn slowly before bursting into flames as he fled the scene.

Hours before the incident, the suspected perpetrator is said to have sent a neighbour’s child to buy Kerosene.

Neighbours said they were awoken by fumes of smoke in the middle of the night and they began battling the fire.

Lifeless bodies of the deceased minors aged 4 and 8, who were Grade two and PP1 pupils at Hope Junior Academy, were found lying on the bed after the fire was put out.

The suspect’s spouse Maria Boke (pictured), 27, confirmed that she has been having disputes with the husband whom they have lived together for more than 10 years.

Boke said on Sunday night that her husband asked her to leave after an argument and while she was away, she received a call informing her of the incident.

Nyali sub county police commander Daniel Masaba said police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who is being sought. “We are investigating the incident. Bodies of the deceased have been taken to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death because there are many scenarios surrounding the incident. We are also investigating the number of the caller who claimed to be the suspect before we give a conclusive report,” said Masaba.
