Speaker insists Bomet got right version of bill
Bomet County Assembly received the correct version of the constitutional amendment bill, Speaker Nelson Mutai has said even as the debate over the version presented to some county assemblies continues.
Mutai who spoke to People Daily said the claims it was one of those that received the wrong copy was misleading since what was delivered to the members was from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Defending the assembly the speaker noted: “There is no way we could tell that the document was erroneous since it came from the electoral body.”
He said: “If there are games they are playing about we are not party to but I can only confirm that I received the right copy and presented to the members for deliberation.”
IEBC through its chairperson Wafula Chebukati has already come out and laid bare the process the commission followed before submitting the copies to the assembly.
In the statement, the chairman said on December 20 last year, it received from the BBI promoters six printed copies of the draft amendment bill and supporter’s details.
He stated that the commission then undertook a verification exercise and ascertained that the required one million threshold had been met.
“On January 26, 2020, the commission requested the BBI promoters for additional printed copies of the bill for onward transmission to the county assemblies…on the same date, the promoters delivered 57 printed copies of the bill out of which the commission submitted 47 to the county assemblies,” read the statement signed by Chebukati.
