State mulls travel alerts in wake of new Corona variant

The government is mulling issuing travel advisories against specific nations in the wake of a new variant strain of Covid-19 that has caused panic in other parts of the world.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe yesterday said the government is considering activating travel restrictions from other countries especially the UK, which has been affected by a new variant strain of Covid-19.
“We are reconsidering what to do with the flights. Nothing is not on the table including a proposal to execute a travel advisory.
So far we have not taken any measures, however, we are keenly monitoring the situation as it unfolds, because even the UK government has its own processes on travelling by her citizens,” he said.
Health experts revealed the government was closely monitoring the situation with a view to identifying whether the new, and more deadly strain was already in the country and whether or not to issue travel advisories to curb its spread.
They, however, dispelled fears that such a variant strain of Covid-19 is in the country following ongoing lab activities that kicked off immediately the World Health Organisation raised an alert, almost a week ago.
Acting director in-charge of Health Standards and Quality Assurance, Dr Simon Kibias and Dr Kamene Kimenye, a public health expert told People Daily that the Health ministry has already taken action in terms of identifying any, “if there is any variant at the moment”.
