State to establish additional one-stop border points
The government will establish more One-Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) along the common border with Ethiopia to facilitate trade and ensure collection of more revenue, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ukur Yatani has said.
Yatani said the additional OSBPs will create an opportunity for the government to collect more revenue from cross border traders.
In 2017, Kenyan customs generated about $70 million (Sh7.3 billion) in revenues up from $16 million (Sh1.7 billion) earned in 2014 along the corridor.
Transport corridors
OSBPs along transport corridors accelerate the movement of goods and people and reduce transport costs across national boundaries.
All procedures and processing of documentation for goods and passengers are carried out in a single clearance hall for exit and entry.
According to the UN Comtrade database, Kenya exported goods worth $62.6 million (Sh6.5 billion) to Ethiopia in 2018, which was a decline from approximately $66 million (Sh6.9 billion) in 2017.
