A post by the directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) attributing the 30-year jail sentence handed by a Nakuru court to Jane Muthoni found guilty five years ago to its “prowess”in investigations has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.

While some lauded the body over its efforts, most of those who responded, however, accused it of laxity in bringing to book perpetrators of high profile cases which they said have continued to remain unresolved for several years now.

They cited the murders of former IEBC official Chris Msando, former businessman Jacob Juma among others.

“The only puzzle that DCI has never been able to crack is the selective application of your prowess in investigations…we have several high and low profile killings that have never been closed, perhaps conflicting interests…good job though,” wrote Arwa Junior.

Daniel Kinyanjui posed, “Why corruption cases taking too long and no positive results, is it because she is a sufferer?”

“The moment you will stop protecting the mighty and let the axe of justice fall on every other person regardless of the clout they hold is the day I will have faith in you,” wrote another follower Njoroge Kia Muturi.

Those who welcomed the sentence in support of the DCI said it was a lesson to everyone that no matter the time it takes for a case to be closed, justice will finally be served.

“Good work by the DCI but the judgement was too lenient on her, she deserved to a life sentence of face a hangman’s noose,” wrote Rafiki Rafiq.

In a post on the official social media pages, DCI, while expressing its determination towards bringing to book all perpetrators of crime said conviction of the suspect was a result of “meticulously gathered evidence”.

Giving a warning to all those who commits crime, the DCI said the case of Muthoni was a “clear demonstration that crime does not pay and that nobody can escape the long arm of the law.”

It further noted that the case reaffirms the prowess of its officers in investigating and unraveling complex murder cases.

Giving an account of the incident, the body said it took a combined effort of officers from homicide, cybercrime, scenes of crime and crime research and those from the intelligence bureau several days to nail the suspects.

“Through investigative interviewing of various witnesses, forensic analysis of the recovered exhibits and repeat combing of the scene for more clues into the murder, detectives managed to place the two accused persons at the scene of the gruesome murder,” reads the tweet in part.

Muthoni is the former principal of Icaciri Girls secondary school.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Joel Ngugi described Muthoni as a vengeful wife who planned and financed her husband's murder.
